Stone Maintenance Don’t’s

Last month we told you the things you should be doing to keep your stone surfaces looking your best, so this month we’re highlighting the thing to NOT do. Stone tends to be a pricier, yet more lasting element than its counterparts, so why not guarantee you have many, many years to enjoy it?Don’t worry, this is a pretty short list thanks to stone’s durable nature.

1.Don’t use vinegar, lemon juice, or other acidic cleaners on marble, limestone, travertine, or onyx surfaces. This includes bathroom cleaners, grout cleaners, or tub and tile solutions.

2.Don’t use vacuums that have metal attachments that could scrape the stone. Light vacuuming, or even just sweeping and mopping will ensure clean floors.

3.Don’t mix chemicals unless the directions advise you to do so. This goes along with the acidic note, but you want to ensure a mixture will not harm your stone surfaces.

That’s it! As long as your stone is cared for, you will have many years to enjoy it!

Stone Maintenance Do’s

Though all stones are different, there are a few general maintenance tips to ensure you get the longest use out of them. Keep in mind, some stones are stronger than others and some are more porous, so these tips may not apply to all. It is always good to research your specific stone to ensure longevity. Here are a few general tips:

-Dust floors frequently.

-Clean surfaces with mild dish soap or soap specialized for your type of stone.

-Make sure to rinse thoroughly and dry off the surface after cleaning.

-Clean up spills immediately- if your stone type is more porous, staining can occur.

-Protect countertops by enforcing the use of coasters, trivets, etc., and protect floors with rugs in high traffic areas (i.e. by the front door).

New Years, New Ways to Use Granite

granite showerWith the new year, we decided to outline some new uses of granite that most people do not think of. Granite is a durable, beautiful stone that can be used in multiple ways, not just on kitchen countertops. What do you think of these ideas?

Granite stairs: You may have seen this luxurious feature at many monuments or museums, but why not bring this idea into your home or business?

Fireplace facade: Many people love stone fireplaces, but generally granite, and even marble, are forgotten about. This brings an added sophistication and provides a sleek to the room, in contrast to the more rugged typical stone fireplaces.

Bathroom tile: Granite also comes in a tile format, which can be utilized in many areas of the home. We especially love this look for bathrooms, since this is a traditional tile room.

Shower surround: Granite slabs or granite tile can be used in your shower for the ultimate bathroom escape.

Outdoor kitchens: Granite comes to mind for most people when considering kitchen countertops materials, but granite can also be used on your outdoor kitchen’s countertops as it is a durable stone.

Stone Flooring

granite-flooringMost people generally think of stones like granite and marble for their countertops, and though not every stone is best suited for the floor, many can make a beautiful statement. Below we highlight which stones work best as a flooring option and in which situations.

  1. Marble is a gorgeous stone, but it is also a soft stone. Therefore, it should not be placed in a high traffic area. It also may need frequent cleaning and sealing.
  2. Granite
  3. Limestone can be polished for a smooth look, or tumbled for a more worn look. It, similarly to marble, will need regular sealant repairs to avoid staining and pitting.
  4. Slate tile is a more rugged stone and is also highly durable. The color does vary, but it adds to the aesthetic.
