Commercial Uses for Granite

granite curbThough most think of granite as the ideal countertop for their kitchen, granite has commercial uses as well.  Here are a few additional uses:

Granite building stone: Buildings can be built with granite block. It can be rough or polished.

Granite facing stone: On projects that want to utilize other materials for structural support, granite can be used as the facing material to add an aesthetic element.

Granite paving stone: Granite pavers can add color to driveways or roads to add a lasting unique result.

Granite memorial: Granite can be used for monuments, memorials, and markers. It is very attractive, durable, and can be polished or engraved.

Granite curbing: Curbs made from granite are more durable than concrete and also provide a more decorative, elegant aesthetic.

Granite and Marble Seams

graniteseams2Most granite and marble slabs are less than 10 feet wide. Therefor, most countertops will need a seam. However, with a butterfly seam and a skilled installer, your countertops can appear seamless. The number of seams necessary depends on the size of slabs and the size of the countertop. The seam placement is also dependent on the size of your slabs, but the configuration of your cabinet and appliance layout will also impact their placement.

You cannot place seams over a dishwasher or any other below-counter appliances. Cooktop cutouts are generally a nice placement for seams as stone can be saved while minimizing seam appearance. All things considered, Synergy Granite will ensure a smooth transition from stone pieces and deliver your dream countertop.

Light, Airy Stone Countertops

Some people prefer a lighter, more airy design for their homes. This look is especially beautiful in the summer and warm climate as the minimalistic look is open and can highlight the outdoor beauty. Both marble and granite come in lighter shades that can make your kitchen have this same feel, especially when combined with glass, white or natural cabinets. Which of these light stones is your favorite?

Honed v. Polished Granite

honed graniteIf you are looking for a different look on your countertops, try honed granite, the matte version of your favorite stone. Honed granite is a popular substitute for those who want the durability and heat resistance of granite, without the polished looked. This is ideal for casual homes or those with a more aged, rustic look.

However, one downside to honed granite is it needs to be sealed more frequently than polished granite (preferably 3 times a year). It is also more susceptible to fingerprints and marks as it is more absorbent. This is especially true in darker hues. It still has the heat resistance and generally strengths of polished granite, just with a little more care.

Cleaning Marble

synergy-marble-countertops-tipsDo you have granite counter tops, but not sure what to do if you get a stain? Follow the steps below and (hopefully) your marble will be protected.
1. Make sure as much of the substance is dried off as possible and try to never let spills sit on marble.
2. Spray the spot with water.
3. Make a paste of baking soda and water and slather the spot with it.
4. Cover with plastic wrap and let it set for 24 hours.
5. Remove the baking soda, which should remove some if not all of the stain.
6. Wash the area with mild soap and water.

** It is important that this will not work on all stains and this method also depends on how long the spill has set on the marble.

Laminate V. Granite

austin-granite-countertop-pricingDo you want the look of stone, but aren’t sure the price is worth it? Laminate can come in stone-like finishes, but does not have the strength, endurance, or beauty of granite. We will break down the strengths and weaknesses of granite and laminate counter tops:
Granite is known for it’s beauty, color variety, and strength. Due to it’s strength, it is scratch resistant, heat resistant, and stain resistant if properly sealed. However, it is more expensive, depending on the color.. This is the best option if you’re looking for durability, a return on investment, and suitability as any sink, back splash or products can be used with granite.
Laminate is a manufactured counter top that can come in a variety of colors and textures. It does not chip, is stain resistant, and a more affordable option. However, it is susceptible to heat, can sustain some damage and does not last as long. It also cannot be used with under mount sinks.
Based on your household’s needs, style and budget, there are options for a stone like counter top, though nothing beats the quality and lifetime strength of real stone.

Granite Countertop Process

1. You can start with a free home estimate. One of our representatives will come to your house to discuss design concerns, product selection, and will take initial measurements for your project.
2. If you haven’t selected which stone type or color you want, Synergy Granite can also talk you through the various options and benefits of each.
3. We will then work with your schedule for the installation. We will start by removing and disposing the old countertops. We will also prepare the space by disconnecting any plumbing and add supports if necessary.
4. We then install the granite and ensure the sink and stove top are set properly.
5. We can also apply a sealant, as we recommend to all clients, to make sure the stone is protected.
