Best Stone Cleaning Tips and Products

If you have recently redone your floors to include stone, you want them to last as long as possible. The best way to ensure that is to use proper techniques and products for cleaning.

Preventative:

  • Use coasters on all stone tableware
  • Immediately pick up spills; blot, don’t wipe

Daily Care:

  • Dusting stone with a dry mop is a great way to keep sand and dirt from building up
  • After using cleaning products, make sure to dry the area with a cloth or squeegee

Cleaning Products:

  • Always use a soft cloth
  • Never use products that contain acids as they could dull stone
  • Lemon and vinegar products can also speed up the aging process of stone

If you are ever unsure about a product, you can call Synergy Granite to ask about our professional opinions and experience with all stone cleaning products.

Where do Marble Countertops come from?

Maintenance can be difficult, but that doesn’t stop marble from being the most coveted counter top material in the world. Where does this beautiful material come from? The answer may surprise you; marble is the result of large amounts of heat and pressure placed on the not-too-popular rock, limestone.

Marble is most commonly known to come from Italy, but there are also marble locations in China, India, Spain and even the United States. The type of marble used in counter tops is referred to as construction marble. It is able to be polished because of its calcite composure, making it ideal for use as a building stone.

After choosing the construction marble that will best fit your home and lifestyle, pieces are cut to fit the specific dimensions then polished. After final inspection, the pieces, or slabs, are shipped off to be installed and become a part of your home.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Marble Countertops

Now that you’ve invested in marble countertops, there are some things you should know about keeping that delightful marble look. For example, did you know that although vinegar is an all-natural cleaning product, using it on marble can cause damage due to the acidity? Below are some of the do’s and don’ts for keeping up with your magnificent marble:

Do:

  • Use a microfiber cloth for daily cleaning and to pick up spills immediately
  • Use coasters to prevent rings that may set in permanently
  • Purchase a cleaner made specifically for your type of marble countertops (in terms of lighter vs. darker marble)
  • Employ cutting boards and the like
  • Be prepared to have to live with some stains and scratches- no matter how hard you try, chances are some scratches and stains will become a permanent fixture on your counter

Don’t:

  • Confuse marble for granite- though the two may look similar, marble is a lot more fragile when it comes to upkeep
  • Leave acidic foods (lemons, tomatoes, etc.) on marble- the acid can quickly leave damaging marks
  • Leave hot pots or pans directly on marble countertops
  • Spend all your free time preventing and cleaning your countertops- do what you can and attribute the rest to an eventful and lively household

Process of a granite counter top: How it’s made

It takes millions of years for the earth to form granite, but only days to get it from the warehouse to your home. Ever wonder how that works? Here are the five basic steps to achieving granite countertops, skipping the first millions of years:

  1. Pick your slab: Customers pick from the wide list of granite available to them
  2. Get measured: Granite professionals make a custom template to make sure the granite is a perfect fit to the space.
  3. Get cut in all the right places: This is more of a two-step process. The initial cut is to get the correct dimensions for the large pieces of the counter; the following cuts provide space for sinks, etc.
  4. Smooth it down: A series of water pressured machines and various buffing heads are used to achieve the eventual sleek and polished finish.
  5. Install it all: Depending on the size of your counter, one or several pieces are placed down and bonded together. Leveling and more buffering are done to make the counter appear as though it is all one piece.

After all of this is finished, sinks and faucets are installed leaving you with a non-porous, stain resistant countertop that is sure to last.

What’s New in 2014: Silestone

Remodels and new homeowners are gravitating toward synthetic materials this year. (Don’t worry granite and marble will NEVER go out of style!) Silestone is both beautifully executed and durable.

Silestone counter-tops (a synthetic quartz counter top) are virtually indestructible. You can’t stain it, scratch it, or burn it with everyday use. They are perfect kid-proof kitchen counter-tops! Silestone surfaces are available in a wide range of colors, finishes and thicknesses to enhance any style interior, no matter what the application. Since it is made from natural quartz, Silestone is also the only quartz surface that prevents the propagation of bacteria. (Again, great for families with children!)
