Granite Care during the Holidays

The kitchen and bathrooms are the most used rooms in the house during the holidays. Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep your granite counter tops looking great during the messy, and stressful holiday season.

Do: Use coasters. Have an abundance on hand for holiday guests.

Do: Use pot holders. We all know that granite can take the heat from a hot pot but they can suffer “thermal shock” and crack. It’s rare but its better to be safe than sorry.

Do: Wipe up spills immediately. Acidic substances will not etch granite but they will marble. They could stain, same with cooking oils. Wipe them up to prevent those stains.

Don’t use generic cleaning products such as bleach, glass cleaners, de-greasers or other common household cleaners. They contain acids, alkalis and other chemicals that will degrade the granite sealer (and will etch marble) leaving the stone more vulnerable to staining.

Do: Use stone cleaners with a soft sponges or cloths. Hot water will do in quick clean ups. Dish soap with work too, but will build up and dull your surface.

Don’t let your guests or yourself sit or stand on counter tops. Your counter tops are hard, but too much weight could cause a crack.

If you follow these easy steps, you could prevent a holiday granite disaster!

Granite Cleaning Tips

Although Granite is extremely durable and can last a very long time, it is important to take good care in cleaning and maintaining it. In between having your granite resealed, here are some best practice tips for cleaning your granite countertops:

1.Soft Cloth or Sponge

Never use abrasive cleaning supplies. According to TLC, “Day-to-day countertop cleaning is easily accomplished with a simple soft cloth or sponge and some gentle dish detergent and water.”

2.Clean Up After Spills

Although this seems like common sense, many times it is easy to overlook a food stain or soda spill in the midst of a chaotic morning or dinner party. When spills happen, wipe them up instantly to prevent stickiness and any possible stains. The same goes for food that may fall on your countertops. Soap and water will also work perfectly to wip up routine spills. Avoid acidic cleaners as they can dull the surface of granite.

3. Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol

Make your own cleaning solution by mixing a little bit of isopropyl rubbing alcohol, dish washing soap, and water. This will clean, disinfect, and shine your countertops.

4.Use Trivets & Coasters

Although granite is strong and can withstand most heat, still use trivets and coasters to avoid scratching from sliding pots, pans, and cups.

Pros & Cons of Silestone Vs. Granite

When considering silestone or granite countertops it can be challenging to determine which to choose. Here are some of the leading pros and cons to help you decided which is best for you.

Silestone:
Extremely durable: The quartz in silestone is at least 90% natural, making it one of the hardest materials found in nature. Its strength makes it less likely to chip and/or crack.
Scratch resistant: Dishes and trivets sliding across the countertops will not scratch silestone
Stain Resistant: Unlike granite, silestone does not need to be sealed to keep its shine and it is non-porous. This naturally prevents liquids from staining the surface.
Large Color Variety: Silestone is available in a wide variety of over 50 stunning colors. Although silestone is an engineered stone, it looks like natural stone.
Easy To Clean: Since silestone is naturally non-porous, it is easier to clean and keep clean than granite.
Scorch Resistant: Silestone can withstand exposure to heat without scorching or burning. However excessive heat from hot items and cookers (such as a crock pot) can cause damage. Using trivets can prevent damage from heat.

Granite:
Beauty: There is no doubt that the natural shine and colors of granite ads beauty and elegance to any home
Large color variety: Granite comes in a range of almost 3,000 different colors.
Unique: No two slabs of granite are exactly the same so it provides an elegant, yet unique look to your home
Sustainable & Permanent: Granite can last a lifetime when properly taken care of. Therefore, if you plan on renovating again, granite can be difficult to remove.
Scratch, stain, & heat resistant: Granite is porous. Therefore, it is only scratch, stain and heat resistant if it is sealed. If sealed, granite is extremely durable and low-maintenance. You can even set warm/hot pans on it without it cracking or scorching. However, granite is also expensive because it requires resealing about once a year.
No depreciation: Granite does not depreciate so it will add value to your home.
